The Old Time is a new book by John Comer about growing up in the 1950s.
The author grew up in the Chilterns and devotes the first hundred pages of his book to the Chiltern Hills and the primary school at West Wycombe which he attended from 1947 to 1954. He then gives a lively account of the grammar school at High Wycombe, a worm's eye view of a formal education which it took him a long time to get accustomed to. He finishes off with an end-of-school camping trip down to the West Country in 1961 which, without his knowing it, was to be the prelude to the loss of love and a friend's death, and the end of a time.
It is a book of wonderful dramatic recreations, full of excited youthful dialogue - a classic boyhood account of a virtually-forgotten world.
